What to say instead of “let me know if you need anything”
It’s kind, but it hands the work back. Here are offers that are easier to say yes to.
“Let me know if you need anything” comes from a good place. But for someone who’s already stretched, it adds a job: figure out what you need, decide whether it’s okay to ask, then ask. Most people don’t.
Make it specific
Instead of an open offer, name something real:
- “I’ve got dinner tonight.”
- “I’ll do bedtime so you can have an hour.”
- “Want me to call the plumber?”
“Let me know” is kind. “I’ve got dinner” is help.
Offer a choice of two
When you’re not sure what would help, give two options: “Would you rather I take the kids out for an hour, or handle the kitchen?” Choosing between two is far easier than inventing a request.
Ask about space, not just tasks
Sometimes the need isn’t a job. “Do you want company tonight, or some space?” is a simple question that respects both possibilities.
Sometimes, just do it
If the dishes are piled up and your partner is exhausted, you don’t need to ask. Do it quietly. The best help often comes without a question attached.
Notice what works
Pay attention to which offers your partner says yes to. Over time you’ll learn what actually helps them, and you won’t need to ask at all.
